Parvo is a virus that causes severe vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy in dogs. 50% of unvaccinated dogs who contract the disease will die from it. Parvovirus is universal – it is everywhere. Infected dogs are contagious for a week before showing symptoms and will shed the virus for up to 3 weeks past infection. The virus can last in the environment for months.
Vaccination is key in preventing this deadly disease. Puppies and dogs who have never been vaccinated need a series of 3 vaccines for full effectiveness, then once a year for continued protection.
